Odoo AI: which apps are really smart, and which are not (yet)

The AI app in Odoo works out of the box in apps like CRM and Documents, but far from everywhere. This overview shows what works as standard and where setup is needed.

Odoo AI: which apps are really smart, and which are not (yet)

In short. The AI app in the current Odoo version works out of the box in apps like CRM, Documents, Knowledge and Website. For operational apps like Sales, Inventory and Manufacturing, you have to decide yourself what the AI may see and do. So judge Odoo AI on your processes, not on a demo.

A customer calls your garden center: which robotic mower is suitable for a 5,000 m² garden, and is that unit in stock?

In theory, you ask the AI chat in Odoo that question and get a usable answer right away. The AI picks a suitable model, checks the stock per location and helps with a quote if needed.

In practice, that does not work automatically across your whole Odoo environment. Some apps have a built-in AI layer. Other apps you first have to open up with AI fields, AI actions and an agent: an AI assistant that carries out tasks itself, within limits that you set.

That distinction helps determine what AI costs in your project, how long it takes and what it delivers.

What does Odoo AI do right after installation?

The AI app is part of Odoo Enterprise, the paid edition. After activation you get a number of capabilities without extra setup.

  • A chat assistant for questions about your Odoo environment and simple actions.
  • AI fields that automatically enrich records with, for example, sentiment, categories or template texts.
  • Natural language searches on standard data.
  • Document searches in linked PDF files and knowledge base articles.
  • Text generation in CRM, email, Knowledge and Website, among others.

For processes with a lot of text work, classification or summaries, that pays off quickly. As soon as a question combines several apps or requires company-specific logic, additional setup is needed.

Why does the robotic mower question not work by itself?

The question about a suitable robotic mower for 5,000 m², plus the stock per location, combines three kinds of information.

  1. Product data: which model fits this garden?
  2. Stock data: what is in which warehouse or location?
  3. Commercial context: how does that become usable advice or a quote?

The first part can be done with an AI field on your product records. Such a field classifies products based on description, specifications or your own criteria.

The stock check and the sales advice do not work automatically. For that, the AI needs to know which stock data it may consult, which warehouses are relevant, which alternatives are allowed and which commercial rules apply. You make those choices, not the software.

Which Odoo apps have an AI layer today?

Odoo provides AI functionality for a specific set of standard apps. That does not mean every app automatically becomes smart after installation.

Standard apps with a built-in AI layer

App What the AI does today
CRMCreate or enrich leads based on incoming information.
AccountingGenerate text suggestions for emails that accompany invoices.
DocumentsSort, classify and tag documents.
KnowledgeGenerate text suggestions and complete knowledge articles.
Live ChatDeploy an AI agent for customer conversations.
WebsiteGenerate pages and content based on snippets and prompts.
RecruitmentDraft text suggestions for communication with candidates.
SignSuggest emails for signature requests.
Voice / VoIPTranscribe and summarize calls.
ESG / CSRDSuggest ESG metrics based on company data.

Standard apps without a separate AI layer

For these widely used operational apps, you decide yourself which AI functionality is needed, via AI fields, AI actions or your own agent configuration.

Sales Inventory Manufacturing Purchase POS Project Helpdesk Planning Timesheets Field Service Expenses Time Off Payroll Appraisals Approvals Subscription Rental Maintenance Repair Fleet Marketing Automation Mass Mailing Survey Events eLearning

For many SMEs, the daily processes sit precisely in that second group. Quotes, inventory, manufacturing, projects and support are therefore not automatically covered by the standard AI functionality.

How do you use AI in apps without a built-in AI layer?

Even without a built-in AI layer, AI remains usable. You then set it up per process, with three building blocks.

  • AI fields for automatic classification, summarization or completion of records.
  • AI actions that allow an agent to carry out concrete tasks, such as retrieving stock or preparing a draft reply.
  • Agent configurations in which you define sources, tools, topics and limits.

The setup mainly requires substantive choices. You decide which information the AI may use, which actions it may carry out and where human control remains necessary. Read how to find that balance in our blog post on the optimal mix of human and artificial intelligence.

What does this mean for your project?

  • The value depends on the apps you use. If you mainly work in CRM, Documents, Knowledge or Website, you see results quickly. If you mainly work in Sales, Inventory, Manufacturing, Project or Helpdesk, you need to plan for extra setup.
  • A demo is not always representative of your process. A smoothly running demo usually shows a flow for which the AI integration has already been prepared.
  • The most important choices are about process. Not just whether AI can technically be added, but above all what it may do.
  • Use AI selectively. Every call consumes tokens, the unit in which AI providers bill their usage. An AI field on 50,000 records can be technically correct and still make little economic sense.
  • The AI app is part of the current Odoo version. If you are still running an older version, first read what a migration involves.

A good assessment therefore does not start from the AI functionality itself, but from the processes you want to make faster, more consistent or easier to control. That is also how we approach every project: first understand your business, then build.

FAQ

No. The current Odoo version provides ready-made AI integrations for a limited set of standard apps, such as CRM, Accounting, Documents, Knowledge, Live Chat, Website, Recruitment, Sign, VoIP and ESG. Other apps, such as Sales, Inventory, Manufacturing, Project and Helpdesk, require additional configuration.

Yes. The AI app, AI agents and AI fields are part of Odoo Enterprise, the paid edition of Odoo.

Yes, provided you set up that AI configuration per process. You decide which stock data the AI may consult, which actions it may carry out and how advice is translated into a quote.

AI calls are usually billed on token usage at the language model provider, such as OpenAI or Gemini. A token is a piece of text that the model processes. One question or field evaluation usually costs little, but at high volumes the cost adds up.

That depends on the configuration. In principle, the context needed to answer the question or carry out the action is shared. For sensitive data, define in advance which information may and may not go to an AI model.

Conclusion

Odoo AI is usable, but not universally deployable after installation. The standard functionality mainly works in apps for which Odoo itself has already provided an AI layer.

For the rest of your environment, the value only emerges after targeted setup. You decide which data becomes available, which actions the AI may carry out and where human control remains necessary.

So judge Odoo AI on your own processes. Not on a demo, but on the concrete tasks your team can speed up or improve with it.
